My now weekend/probably should sell car is a 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon, nothing special other than I've upgraded the turbo and had the ECU retuned for a few more ponies. But after racking up more than 20,000k's in under 18 months using it as my daily work car (driving off site around Christchurch) I felt it was too nice to be driving constantly, plus it's not great on gas around town (averages 12.3L per 100k diddling around)

Also, my work moved buildings and now has no on site, or even close by off site parking :(

So I decided to get a cheap daily.. except I still wanted something a little fun, so I bought this:

Admittedly, I should have spent more time inspecting it before buying it and I probably would have offered a lot less, however it's been fun working on it as it's not too hard to work on.

After buying the car and spending a few hours I found the following issues:

- No coolant, the water was brown as poo
- The heater didn't work at all
- The radio was dead and wiring was a mess
- There was a leak in the boot
- Central locking didn't work
- Wiper blades were so crap they did nothing
- Air filter appeared to have been 100000 years old
- Interior smelled of wet dog (still does sadly)
- The dash has been out at some point as only two bolts were holding it in
- Idles at 1500rpm whether hot or cold
- Found an oil leak.
-- The oil leak was because some clever person didn't do the oil filter on tight and was loose.

BUT, the engine and turbo felt great! Really liked to rev and pull.

What's been done to date:

- Oil + oil filter
- brand new heater core
- radiator flushed and pressure tested
- new air filter
- dash mounted better (not properly but 90%)
- radio wiring fixed + new sony radio
- new wiper blades
- new gearbox oil
- Fixed the boot leak
- sadly this has been in a decent prang and the drivers tail light doesn't sit well at all with the chassis and you can see the questionable repair job
- New dissy rotor + cap
- new thermostat

- I hand washed the panels (Feat. my impreza)

Next on the list is:

- Fix the high idle. After posting here + endless googling, I'm thinking it may be the waxstat on the throttle body. I just need to test it and then go from there.
- New rims. I've found some on Trademe, nice little 15's.
- New rotors + pads all around.
- May replace the o2 sensor
- Under seat sub as the 4" speakers are tinny!
- new struts and maybe some lowering springs.

I'd like some fog lights + the front bumper lip.. but I think it will be good luck finding the lip.

Update time!

The front brakes were rebuilt in order to pass a WoF due to a front brake imbalance and it now has 4x new tyres. That pretty much took out most of my money, but it's great having it back on the road.

Either the battery or the alternator isn't holding up, as frequently if I indicate, the car will hesitate and the stereo will turn off and back on. I haven't got a multimeter to test.

Update on the alternator situation.

I actually spent more than 5 minutes checking the battery and found an earth and power wire were sitting loose on the terminals, so I clamped them down and since then I've had no issues. Success! I did say to myself when I sort this out, I'd get a little under seat Subwoofer because the 4" speakers are tinny. But I have no money to just yet :(

It's been almost a month since I clamped down the earth and power wires and the car has been pretty damn flawless, so in celebration, I fitted a Fusion underseat sub.

And I've started looking up part numbers for a bit of an engine over haul:

1510011071 - Oil pump ass
9030162006 - Oil pump O ring
9031135040 - Crank shaft seal
1610019226 - water pump ass
- water pump o ring ??
1356819106 - Cam/Timing belt
1350511040 - idler
9050616050 - Spring for idler
1350311030 - idler 2

Price comes up to around $700 for the parts.. but that doesn't include labor. The mechanic I take my Subaru to hasn't got much knowledge on Toyota's, if there are any Mechanics in Christchurch you'd recommend, let me know!

Update time:

Went to Pick a Part today and grabbed the following:

- Wing mirror control switch to replace the broken one in the car

- Drivers side wing mirror that is the correct colour of the car

- Another Heater fan in hopes that it works better compared to the currently installed one

- Drivers side, skirt that doesn't have a dent in it.

Replacement heater fan, which works SO MUCH BETTER!

Long time, no update.

Image

- Bumper with fog lights from Pick-a-part
- Clear indicators
- Colour matched wing mirrors
- Boost gauge installed

Should really save up for a new clutch and fix the oil leaks.

I've said to the car that if it passes a warrant this Friday, I'll treat it to new struts.

Minor update: It did fail the WoF, due to a leaking brake caliper, found the leak to be a worn copper washer on the banjo bolt, easy $2 fix.

Aside from that, I purchase some new floor mats which looks A LOT nicer compared to the el-cheapo's from Supercheap and slowly but surely the interior is starting to smell a bit nicer.. still gross but better.
