Looseunits EP82

Post by Looseunit » Sat Jul 30, 2011 5:25 pm

Thought id finally get around to putting up a build thread of my EP82, feeling slightly less lazy than I usually am.

I bought the car about 8 years ago, pretty much stock except for a 2.5" press bent exhaust and a ct12 from a hiace. Drove it around for a year untouched until I started talking to Kris who pretty much made me start changing stuff. Fiddled around with a few minor things in it like Trd leads, Rx7 top mount, Mr2 fuel pump and some random BOV.

Went up to the 2nd? Honda vs Toyota drags like this, track was horrible and I broke a selector cable and ended up with an epic 16.1@146km. Drove it home from Meremere to Masterton not being able to select 5th or reverse. Found a pic someone had took from the day too.
Image

Not long after this I succumbed to Kris telling me how much standard turbos sucked, he had a few bits lying around and had upgraded his v4 link to a link plus so I decided to drive all the way up to his house and get some Teal Bay modifications.

Ended up with the following setup:
T3 off a LD20
Custom exhaust Manifold
2.5" Drop pipe
ACIS Mani
Vr4 Intercooler with 2" Stainless piping
V4 Link
Image

Was running wastegate boost which was around 8-9 psi, was a major improvement over the old setup. Had this dyno'd at a toyspeed dyno day and it made 101kw, then the tuner made some tweaks to the tune and it ended up at 114kw.

Took it up to a private drag day at meremere and was quite suprised to get a 14.2@160km.

I was sick of wastegate boost at this stage so I decided to bite the bullet and fork out for an eboost2. I think it was one of the best things i ever bought for the car and im still using it now. Raised the boost a little and started going to the Masterton drag meets. Eventually managed to crack my first 13 still on street tires with a 13.94@159km
Image

The internal gate setup on the t3 was pretty crap and I decided it was time for an external. I grabbed a .30 T3 exhaust housing off Kris that had the internal port enlarged and made a setup that had the wastegate running off the enlarged wastegate port. It was a bastard to make and wasnt very pretty but it worked really well and i ran the setup for 2 to 3 years with no hassles.
Image

I found a freshly rebuilt 60 trim t3 on trademe and decided to buy it as the one I had was only around a 40 or 45 trim compressor and the 60 trim was going to be capable of alot more power and able to run more boost efficiently. At the same boost it didnt go all that much better so more boost was in order. Bought a Innovate LC1 and used it to crank the boost up to 18 psi. The turbo seemed to wake up with more boost thrown at it and it went pretty hard.

Took it to the Toyspeed Megameet dyno day at Roskildas and to my suprise took out highest power output of the day with 156kw. Getting it to hook up on the dyno was a mission and ended up with 2 people sitting on the front guards to hold it down to get it to grip.
Image

The weekend after that I took it to the masterton drags with some 225/50/15 Yokohama semi slicks that i got cheap off a mate. First run of the day 13.59@169km

By the end of the meet I had got it down to a 13.27@176km knocking out a few unexpected cars along the way

I had been using a 4 puk autoclutch disc with the standard pressure plate but it started to slip. I thought this was good motivation to go LSD. So i ordered a Trd Lsd off Revhead and got Geartech in Palmy to install it along with some new side bearings and seals. My mate had been working on another GT and the guy had sucked into spending big dollars on a trd 3 puk clutch but he hated how harsh it was so went back to a standard one and left the trd one with my mate. Bonus for me as we chucked that in when the gearbox went back on, free clutch ftw!
Just had to check that it spun both wheels, turns out the lsd works........
Image

Lsd made a major difference and I wouldve cracked a 12 had I not missed 4th gear and spent the last 50m or so in neutral running a 13.03@160km
Image

I was never quite able to emulate that run again and the car ended up with a swag on 13.0's but never did crack that 12 with the 4e

Inbetween pondering about going to a 5e I bought some other stuff for it. Some tein coilovers and cusco front and rear strut braces off trademe. A momo start fixed bucket seat. And for good measure some cp035 rims and some 195/50/15 hankook k105 tires.

Started saving as I decided to go all out on my 5e build and do it once do it right. Got some 0.5mm oversize Ross pistons and Pauter rods off Kris that he had intended on putting in his 5e but his plans changed and I bought them off him.
Got rod?
Image

Block all assembled and also modded to use 4age arp head studs
Image

Was only intending on using this for drag racing so rang up kelfords and told them what i wanted. Sent the head down to them and got it back all ported with 284 degree cams and heavier valve springs
Image

Got the mounts urathane filled at plus plastics
Image

New tial BOV to replace the tired old one
Image

.63 VG30 exhaust housing off trademe. Got Damian at A1 turbos to mill it out to suit the 60 trim t3.
Image

Kris's custom inlet that was on his 5e
Image

Also bought Kris's Hoosiers as he didnt have any use for them any more.

Put the car on a trailer and headed back up to Kris's for the final touches. Kris got the it started and made a guess tune which ended up being spot on so that i could run the engine in. Once it had a few kms on it Kris took it out to give it a tune. He arrived back some time later to tell me that it had maxed out the GTX injectors at 9 psi boost. He cranked the fuel pressure up a bit and managed to get 11 psi boost out of it but that was about as high as it was guna go.

I took it out for a thrash and was amazed how hard it went for only 11 psi, way quicker than the old setup on 18 psi!

This is how the engine bay looked after everything was completed and tuned.
Image

Image

Even though it was only running 11 psi i decided to take it up to 4 and Rotor Nats anyway. I chucked on the hoosiers that id bought off Kris a while back put it on the trailer and headed up to meremere. The power increase was immediately apparent with 182km trap speeds and eventually a 12.8. Not bad for such puss boost

A week later I took it to the Masterton drags and busted out a 12.40@180km!

Dyno time was next. The 11 psi tune made 163kw with power still not dropping away at 8k rpm
Image

Decided bigger was better and got Damian to make me a t3/t4 keeping the same exhaust housing so it would bolt straight back on. He sent me back a TO4b H trim compressor wheel and housing bolted up to the t3 core and exhaust housing.
Image

Bought some 560cc injectors off a evo 7 and took it back to speedworks for him to install the injectors and tune it. Either the exhaust or the intercooler piping caused a bottleneck as it wouldnt make any more power past 15 psi. But it was now making 186kw.
Image

Unfortunately the extra lag meant it was almost impossible to keep on boost between gear changes so I bought a c56 off a 1997 BZ-G and had geartech swap the internals over giving me a 4.3 final drive. This dropped 40km pretty much off each gear and it was now possible to keep it on boost.

Bought a evo 6 intercooler and made up some 2.5" alloy piping to suit. Initially I had the turbo side hanging down quite far as I was running 26x10.5 mickey thompson tires at that stage so i wasnt too fussed about how far it hung down as the car was jacked up rediculously high to fit the tires
Image

Later on when i started driving it on the road again i changed it so it was a little more road friendly.
Image

I also made up a full 3" exhaust from turbo and a plumb back as i wanted to get a WOF for it.
Image

Image

Back to the dyno and this time no problems and a result of 231kw at 18 psi. Theres definately scope for heaps more power out of it but not much point putting much more into it as i doubt the drivetrain will cope.

After having a bit of a mishap at the end of the 2009 season with the crank pulley coming off halfway down the drag strip, the car got parked up for a while until i gained some interest in it again.

I got a crank pulley off Dexgt and took the car into the Rebuilders to get fixed. Unfortunately when the rocker cover was pulled off some strange damage on some of the cam lobes was found. After having the cams sent down to Kelfords to be repaired it was decided that the Penrite oil i had been running wasnt coping, so I had to change to the mega expensive Castor based Motul oil which must be made of gold as it costs around $140 for 4L. Around $1300 later the car was running again.

Decided id better get a dyno run before I ran it on boost incase the timing was messed up by the new crank pulley. So took it to STM for a dyno check up. Lucky I did as it had some knock at peak torque. Andre knocked the base timing back to 5 degrees to make it safe which killed the power a little bit but still made 226kw.
Image
Red and green lines are the runs Andre backed out of, was heading towards a pretty decent figure if it hadnt had the knock.

Ran at 2 more meets after this. First meet ran a new pb of 12.21@191km, but wasted the clutch halfway through Sunday. I was kinda expecting this as it was 2nd hand when i put it in and had lasted 3 seasons. This was the first meet that i tried out a suction camera mount i bought on trademe. Used my dads digital camera and was quite happy with the quailty.

This is what happens when you dont have enough fuel in the tank and you get fuel surge...

And this is what happens when you dont get enough revs up on a 2nd gear launch..... It does sound pretty sweet when it comes on power tho

And this was the PB, can hear the clutch slipping pretty bad on the gear changes

Mp Autoparts made me a new clutch with a modified 1980lb pressure plate and solid centre 3 puk plate. Went to the final Masterton meet of the year and came 4th in Super Street (DYO) and also got my pb down to a 12.13@186. Had some wastegate/boost issues leading up to the drags so was only running about 16.5 psi so was pretty happy with that. Only got a 12.21 on video, but you can hear the difference in the gear changes from the last meet, I also had to launch from alot higher revs to stop it from bogging.

That may have been its last appearance at the strip as I have bought a new project to become the new drag car. This one may end up being a daily driver again in a less modified state, havent really decided yet.
