I have started making a surge tank that will have a in-tank pump fitted , I will take some pics soon.

In the weekend just gone I tried out my new dunlop semi slicks at a double hill climb weekend (they were awesome).
I got 4th overall and 2nd in class the 1st day
http://youtu.be/gGuEgw-me_I

and I got 2nd overall and in class , and overall for the weekend with this run on the sunday
http://youtu.be/bH5NaK0Xs0I

I don't know how I can beat the 1UZ powered batmobile RX7 in my class but hopefully E85 will help

Here is a pic of the surge tank I'm making , it is around 2 litres and has a DW300 pump in it , I will be using the existing in tank pump as a feed pump
Image

I did another double hill climb weekend a week ago and had a good time , thou I need to sort out the handling as I couldn't get it to go around the big left hand corner on the sunday , I won my class but only got 7th overall ( out of 30)
http://youtu.be/veqMxMna9dE

The saturday event was more fun and I also won my class and got 5th overall
http://youtu.be/hHowgeR5Rb8

I have ordered some adapters for the ID1000 injectors that clip on to the ID's and let me plug the curent denso plugs on without rewiring . I will put up a pic when they arrive.

The adapters for the ID1000 injectors have arrived , you can see them fitted to the bottom two injectors in the pic, at only $16US for 4 it makes for an easy upgrade with no rewiring to do. 8)
The only issue so far is the injectors with their adapters on are 12mm longer than the denso ones I'm taking out , so will have to make some new spacers for the fuel rail.

I have an event on the 23rd and I'm hoping to have the E85 re-tune done by then , will depend on the dyno availability really.

Well the car has been tuned on E85 , had a couple of issues , the thermostat decided that opening when hot was optional so that got replaced , then the head bolts (still standard at the moment) couldn't hold the head down at high boost so the head gasket let go. Car still made 262Kw and 403 Nm while blowing the water out the overflow . We turned the boost down so ended up with 250Kw and 380Nm till I get ARP bolts fitted. Then spent all day Saturday replacing the head gasket so I could race on sunday at one of my favorite sprints Kaihinau road
http://youtu.be/8qvkbAm3QRQ
It was fun as the car was wheel spinning every time it hit peak torque , I ended up 2nd in class and 4th overall out of 30 odd cars and now need to sort the handling so I can get more of the power down
I ended up not fitting the surge tank for the dyno due to running out of time for sealing it up properly so thats a job still to do.
I may have to get a bigger battery as the E85 takes a lot of cranking to start when cold.

I have decided to sort the handling out as the next project , I am starting with bump steer so I made this gauge , I just have to make the wheel board then I can see how much I have . Judging by how it goes all over the place on road camber and more so when shocks are on soft setting I'm thinking a fair bit.
Image
I told my powder coat guy to surprise me , I quite like the Kermit green , pretty sure there's not another one like it
After I measure the bump steer I think I will need to fit rod ends to the steering rack arms and mount them under the steering arms on the hub and shim them .
Then there's the roll center adjusters I want to make and maybe caster plates to fit to the coil over camber plates

I recently did the Port road sprint where I came dead last
Turns out the problem at port road was the G4 ECU cutting revs due to low oil pressure , so I drained the oil and decided that lots of sparkly bits wasn't likely to be a good sign .
I dropped the sump off and as expected the bearings are fubared and the crank will need a grind at minimum , very likely need a new oil pump too , tomorrows job is pulling the motor out and inspecting things .

Upon inspection at the engine guys , the list of stuffed bits is as follows , crank , pistons and oil pump , so the new plan was to put a standard 5EFHE in with my turbo etc and doing the last hill climbs for the year.
Well the cunning plan of putting a standard 5EFHE in my car and seeing how long it lasts with boosting failed before it even began . The motor I went to pick up from the wreckers turned out to be a 4E someone had replaced the 5E FHE with in the car then I went to pickapart and in the last 2 days they have removed the car I was going to get the motor out of .

So the new plan is to fit the old 4E turbo motor the car had in it before the race motor
Have been busy today , been looking for the lightened 4E flywheel and have come to the conclusion that I probably sold it a few years ago , so removed the standard one off a spare motor . The clutch plate had rusted onto the flywheel so it was lucky that Greg from MP Autoparts had said he was happy to clean up the flywheel today if needed , huge thanks to him.
I also swung by Customworks to see if I could get my baffled sump back, luckily John the boss was there , unfortunately he gave me the bad news that the block is joining the crank and pistons on the worn out heap so the 4E might be the race motor for some time.
At the workshop I dragged out the old 4E race car motor and started prepping it , so it now has a standard turbo sump glued on as the baffled one seems to have warped after the CV damage repair and the block has a coat of silver paint on it to make it feel like a race motor.
Tomorrow I'll take the old head off and put the ported head on with the ARP bolts , put the best waterpump etc on it , then get it back in the car so it's ready for a retune next week so I can get to blairgowie road sprint next weekend so no pressure there.

It will be interesting to see what the 4EFTE does on the dyno with the GTX turbo and E85

Well to update this I didn't make it to blairgowrie road sprint as the 4E was also down on oil pressure .
I pulled the sump off and inspected a couple of bearings and the oil pump, the bearings looked ok , the pump not as much so I ordered a new pump and fitted it when it finally arrived.
It still didn't have very good pressure but it went to the dyno anyway , it survived the tuning but the tuner suggested that with 40 odd psi max pressure it wasn't going to last that long.
On E85 it ended up making 216Kw and 320Nm on 18psi as it developed a misfire at higher boost .
I got to the event on saturday which was the 1st round of the national hill climb champs and saw what I was up against , in my class there were type R civics and integras, v8 powered bmw , 2.5 ltr skylines and then there was the late model evo and sti national level rally cars.
The car didn't feel that flash in practice and I was expecting a slowish time so when I discovered that I was in the top ten and fastest 2wd I thought there might be a chance of a good result.
Here is the in car of the run that got me 1st in class and 5th overall and it was less than a second from 3rd overall , there were some rather stunned looks from the 4wd guys that I beat
http://youtu.be/fyFQm6Y-WWI
It was a bit worrying to look at the speedo near the top and see 190+ km/hr and 40psi oil pressure but it survived the whole weekend .

After this was finished I loaded up and drove from Hawkes bay to wanganui for the sunday hill climb.
In the recon run it sounded like there was a spanner in the back and upon inspection I found that one of the rear sway bar links had come loose at the top so I had to take it off and run the day with no rear bar.
Considering that the front bar is uprated to suit the rear bar it made for some interesting handling during the day .
Here is the fastest run that got me 1st in class and 6th overall , the gps says I'm doing 180.4 km/hr at the finish line
http://youtu.be/gTLlsb_irWo

Looks like I have plenty to do over xmas

The "temp" 1300 is still going , it has done 2 more hill climb / sprints and a grass autocross and motokarna , and it is not pleasant to drive , it only gets 38psi oil pressure, it does however seem to still be quite quick .
It got 3rd in class in the 1st sprint and won the event in the 2nd one , unfortunately it feels like it makes no power till 6500 then hits the rev cut at 8k and you can feel the vibrations thru the pedals over 6k  .
I have brought a project car and the motor was reconed 30-40K ago , the insides look clean and the bearings are good , so seeing as the new race motor won't be ready in time for the clubsport nationals next month I am going to put the project car motor in and use that.

I put the "project" car's motor in , and it is massively better than the 1st "temp" motor , this one even has oil pressure.
I have been to the clubsport champs and ended up 7th overall , 12th in the motokarna and autocross , and 10th out of 48 in the hill climb which I think is awesome for an internally standard 4E , here is a link to the in car vid http://youtu.be/XhDi039Te5E
The new pistons finally arrived so the new 5E race motor is underway so looking forward to getting that finished and in the car .

I did a autocross a week or two ago in the race starlet and discovered that almost bald semi slicks in the rain is like bringing a blunt knife to a gun fight  .
after spinning 180 and missing the kerb by not much I decided to put it on the trailer while it was still straight , so now I need a full set of new semis before the next sprint , which just happens to be the one I parked backwards into a bank at 70km/hr last year

blog post 20 is up http://wp.me/p4xPrk-3X is mostly about the rear radiator mounting .

On the race car front I have just ordered 4 new Dunlop soft semi slicks so the bank account is smarting a bit , but the next sprint will be awesome with all that grip :-)
